Songs and Nostalgia

Spread the love

Songs tend to arouse memories of certain times in my life- when I was in school, graduation, when I had my children, etc. They take me back to a time that was much simpler, and freer.

“Say Say Say” Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. 1983

“Vogue” Madonna (1990) This song takes me back to just before high school graduation, having just married and being six months pregnant with my first child.

“Hit by love” by CeeCee Peniston and “Too Funky” by George Michael take me back to when my second child was born. When I was in labor, I needed a focal point to keep my mind off the contractions which seemed to engulf me. In the hospital, the TV in my room and I asked the nurse to turn the channel to VH1 where I could use the music as a distraction. The videos to these two songs played.

I kept my eyes focused on the TV as I did my breathing, which went something like,

“Hee-hee-hee-hee-hooooo. Hee-hee-hee-hee-hooooo!” It definitely helped. LOL

Do you have songs that take you back in time? Perhaps to special life events that happened in your life? Feel free to comment below?

Yes. Songs definitely are nostalgic. I was just thinking about this recently. A Heart song came on the radio and it took me back to junior year in high school riding the bus back from a competition. What’s Love Got to Dow With It takes me back to senior year working on the homecoming float. So many more.

Absolutely! I remember Tina Turner and the the year “What’s Love Got to Do With It” was on the radio. It was around the Fall of 1984 and I’d just started junior high (middle school).

I love the topic! From my post, What Music Means to Me. (It’s short, so I’ll just paste it):

I don’t know if I have ever heard anyone say the phrase: I don’t like music. You are more than likely to hear someone say: That Ferrari belongs to the mime.

I usually have music playing. Sometimes, when if I hear a new song, I can picture myself in a past experience. It is as if the song was written for me for that event.

Music makes me cry, sometimes. I tried to record a song that I wrote, but I couldn’t get through it without stopping to wipe the tears or catch my breath. There are songs that I hear that still bring a tear to my eye.

Music makes me smile, often. More often than not. Music moves me. I don’t know what I would do without music. Be very sad, I suppose, unless I never knew about music in the first place, but who would want to live in a world like that?

And BTW, can somebody move that Ferrari? It’s blocking my Pinto.

Absolutely, Greg. My niche is bullying and I usually post songs that deal with the topic. But every once in a while, I veer outside the topic and post songs that bring back great memories and talk about those great times. Music is great therapy!

I’ve noticed, I like the bullying-related songs… music is definitely great therapy. And along with the niche idea, my niche is 90s rock because that’s what I associate most with those stories, but I occasionally post outside the genre too; I was listening to 70s and 80s classic rock a lot back then too, and I have some specific memories associated with other genres of music, like some of the church music I’ve shared, or the song from Dangerous Minds for the episode about that movie.

Yeah… or at least the music that the media chose to make popular went downhill. There is still good music out there, and some of the bands I was listening to back then are still around (Gin Blossoms has had three albums in the 21st century, the most recent in 2018; Toad the Wet Sprocket started playing and recording together again in the early 2010s; and Hootie and the Blowfish released another album in 2019, the first in fourteen years, although I also started listening to country music in the early 2000s and I recognized Darius’ voice right away when his solo country career came along so part of them never really went away), but the good music just doesn’t get much attention in the mainstream.

So true! Related thought: I remember a few years ago, some silly 12 year old girls who know me asked me who my celebrity crush was. I think they were disappointed to find out that it wasn’t Taylor Swift or Beyonce or anyone they had heard of. I’m probably too old to have a celebrity crush in the first place, but whatever…

          • cheriewhite says:

I hear ya! I don’t have any celebrity crush anymore. But when I did, they were Patrick Swayze and Mel Gibson! That was a long time ago! 😂🤣😂 I’m getting old.

I still have celebrity crushes — especially Roger Daltrey — and my spouse frequently gets annoyed when I fangirl out loud. 🙂
